India’s iconic Ambassador car--easily the most recognisable vehicle on the country’s potholed roads -- has been celebrating its 50th birthday this year. . Ambassador -- known in India as the automobile equivalent of a workhorse for its ability to survive the worst road conditions , this country roads can offer . The Ambassador’s bulky design, based on the 1950s British-built Morris Oxford, is little changed from when it first rolled off the assembly line in 1957. It’s an Indian icon,” said Hormuz Sorabjee, editor of India’s leading automobile magazine, Autocar. For much of the history of independent India when the economy was closed to imports “the joke was that you could buy any car in India -- so long as it is an Ambassador . Ambassador is still the first vehicle , Foreign Visitors see when they arrive at airport taxi stands -- taxi drivers being its most loyal fans, buying 65% of the cars. It is still , the  Favourite Car of  many top government officials and politicians,. The vehicle is purchased by many people in rural India who know it as a car that lasts, even though it is famously prone to mechanical hiccups. “There’s always some little thing that goes on it. People joke everything in it makes a sound except the horn,” said Sorabjee. “But it can be fixed by any village mechanic anywhere and it’s extremely durable.”

Jeeps are the Transport of Choice in Rural India , especially due to their Rugged Construction ( & Reliability ) , open spaces , Powerful Engine , high ground clearance  & their ability to carry a Much Larger number of passengers , in proportion to their size . Especially during the Monsoon Season , when the Roads in Rural ( Urban & Semi Urban ) India turn into Terrible Dirt Tracks ( With Potholes ..etc) .

This Bus stand is located at Badrinath Dham ( Garhwal Himalayas ) . Just Ten years ago , Badrinath ( Kedarnath & other Hindu Shrines ) in the Higher reaches of the Holy Himalayas  were Inaccessible , by any Form of Motor Transport . Roads were Non Existent .Pilgrims , who  then only , consisted of Only Sadhus & Sanyasis ( & other Wealthy  Religious Patrons ) , since they could only afford the rigous of such Travel by foot . After having Disastrously Lost the 1962 War with China , Indian Government belatedly realized the Importance of Transport Infrastructure in the Himalayas . With building of Roads upto the last of Outposts of Indo China Border ( where Badrinath is Located ) , all the Holy Hindu Himalayan Shrines are now accessible by roads . Pilgrimage to Char Dham Shrines increased Dramatically . People from across India( & Abroad ) visit these Shrines , regularly every year.
